I guess I really don't understand the Derek Jarman readings as they seem to be all over the place and I don't know what we should be getting out of them. Does anyone have any ideas about how to answer this or what to look for?

I think the idea is that he's writing about the ways color makes him feel in a direct, stream-of-consciousness style. He's going by instinct instead of overthinking something. The fact that he draws from many personal experiences in these writings show that reactions to color can be different for different people. The same goes for filmmakers/film viewers.
ReplyDeleteThink about the many frames of reference that Jarman has for talking about color. Art, film, literature, painting, fashion, illness, gardening, relationships, sex, history, etc.
ReplyDeleteHow could such frames of reference inform how a film artist approaches the use of color in film? How may it have informed Jarman's own use of color in his films?
